Harman Kardon has a potentially highly competitive multiroom offering in its new Omni range, which currently comprises the Omni 10 and Omni 20 wireless speakers and the ‘Adapt’ plug-in to upgrade existing systems. They use Blackfire Research wireless media technology amd support 24-bit/96kHz file streaming. Two speakers can be combined easily to work as a wireless stereo system, or five to create a full multi-channel speaker system. Bluetooth connectivity ensures you’re not trapped within a proprietary app.
Control is via app and a standard Wi-Fi-connection, with no network-cable connection required. One-touch ‘Follow Me’ audio lets you walk from one room to another with music following you at the touch of a button, even when streaming from Bluetooth. A ‘Link’ cycles through multiple streams so you can pick your favourite, while one long press starts party mode, with every speaker playing back the same music. The system will be open to developers, allowing third-party apps, new listening modes and tuning options, or other streaming services. US pricing is $200 and $300 for the two speakers, and $130 fdor the HD Adapt.
