It is with great sadness that we announce the death of leading Australian speaker designer and founder of Whatmough Loudspeakers, Colin Whatmough, who passed away on January 4th.
Colin was the creator of some of Australia's finest loudspeaker designs, driven by the desire to achieve true hi-fi reproduction at all levels. Whatmough Monitors was founded in 1976, with the launch of the no-compromise Whatmough Monitors Mk.II (a huge transmission line/open baffle hybrid). The Mk.II was the first speaker to incorporate lead lining in its construction which conferred significant dampening benefits. The 130kg speaker became a benchmark for Australian audiophiles.
In subsequent years, speaker designs large and small, stereo and multi-channel, have won Colin and the company multiple awards from Sound+Image and others, for designs always characterised by a desire to achieve tonal accuracy above all, in addition to extended frequency range, a wide spacious soundstage, transient response, coherent and seamless integration, as well as rhythm and timing - all essential to the criteria for a high fidelity loudspeaker.
He will be greatly missed by all those who have known and worked with him, and we pass our condolences and best wishes to his wife Kee and children Vanessa and Jason, who have asked us to publish the following message.
Colin Whatmough 1950–2011
It is with great sadness that we announce Colin Whatmough died suddenly yesterday, Tuesday 4 January 2011.
As a family, we’ve decided to continue operating our business, Whatmough Loudspeakers, as this would have been Colin’s wish.
Colin was a hi-fi enthusiast. He was considered one of Australia’s leading speaker designers, a tribute we are exceedingly proud of.
What first began as a hobby became a life-long labour of love. Colin established the company in 1976. We worked together tirelessly to grow the business to what it is today–a multi-award winning, wholly Australian owned brand.
Colin’s passing comes at a time of great advancement for Whatmough Loudspeakers, with new product models ready for release. As always, these models were designed with Colin’s incredible passion and attention to detail.
In honour of our husband and father, we will release these models as ‘special editions’ in coming months.
We would like to assure our customers that, together with our excellent and loyal staff, we will continue to operate our business as usual. This will include provision of sales and technical support, and the honouring of warranties.
Finally, we’d like to express our sincerest gratitude to you–our friends, customers and the Australian audio industry as a whole–for your enduring support.
Kee, Vanessa and Jason Whatmough.
