The Red Bull Illume Image Quest is the world’s biggest competition for adventure and action sports photography. In 2016, a record-breaking 34,624 images were submitted to the Red Bull Illume Image Quest by 5646 photographers from 120 countries, with Lorenz Holder from Germany crowned as the overall winner for the second consecutive time . Because of this success, the competition will now be held every two years rather than three.

The Image Quest 2019 is the fifth edition of the competition and introduces two new categories; Best Of Instagram by SanDisk and the Moving Image category. Submissions for Best of Instagram by SanDisk are open from now until 14 June, 2019 and will be judged by the community every month, while entries for the main contest are open from 1 May to 31 July 31, 2019. These entries will be judged by a panel of 50 photo editors from around the world. Each judge will vote in three rounds – first for the five finalist images and then for the one Category Winner in each of the 11 categories. From the 11 category winning images they will vote for the Overall Winner. The judges will be looking for a mix of composition, technical superiority, creativity, visual impact, artistic flair and overall qualities of photographic excellence.

There is now a total of 11 categories with the other nine being Creative by Skylum, Emerging, Energy, Innovation by Sony, Lifestyle, Masterpiece, Playgound, RAW and Wings. The RAW category invites submissions which are shots straight out of the camera and showcase “the real image… composition, exposure and lighting done in front of the lens and in the scene, not behind a screen”.

The competition is ‘open submission’ and there is no entry fee. Any professional or amateur photographer from anywhere in the world may submit images. For full entry requirements and the competition rules visit
