Focal’s new FPX line of amplifiers has just been released featuring a strong design mandate for sound quality first. Ergo, the ‘SQ’ in the denomination of the premium model in the range, the FPX 4.400 SQ.
The FPX amplifier line includes the FPX 4.800 4/3/2-channel amplifier (4 x 120 watts RMS), the aforementioned FPX 4.400 SQ 4-channel amplifier (4 x 70 watts RMS), the FPX 1.100 monobloc (1 x 420 watts RMS) and FPX 2.750 2-channel amplifier (2 x 220 watts RMS). All are Class-D designs except for the FPX 4.400 SQ which is a Class-AB design (see review within these pages) and also features audiophile quality Sanken transistors. The FPX amplifiers are all priced at $599.
The FPX amplifiers are low distortion designs with the FPX 4.800 featuring 0.01 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and better than 76dBA Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) while the figures for the FPX 4.400 SQ are 0.04 percent THD and 77dBA SNR.
The monobloc FPX 1.100 has a THD of 0.08 percent and SNR of 76dBA while finally the FPX 2.750 dual channel amplifier’s figures are 0.01 percent THD and 76dBA SNR.
The entire range of amplifiers are load-tolerant down to 2 ohms and are high power high current designs. The amplifiers feature MOS-FET output devices with the chassis been designed for optimal heat dissipation while maintaining a small footprint. Focal has included a number of protection circuits including short circuit, DC and overheating protection.
