Danish manufacturer Ortofon has added a new super-budget phono cartridge to its famous OM 5 Series—the OM 5S.

The new OM 5 Series offers a truly spectacular range of entry-level cartridges to suit all tastes and budgets,' said Sam Encel, of Interdyn, which distributes Ortofon in Australia. ‘The impressive sound and high-quality design across the board, coupled with an incredibly convenient upgrade path, makes the OM 5S a brilliant choice, not least because it delivers impressive performance for an entry-level cartridge, and its stylus is interchangeable with other OM styli. It’s a perfect introduction to the world of hi-fi at a price that can't be beaten.’

The design of the OM 5 series cartridges means that a special mounting bracket (supplied) is required, tucked into which is a tiny, removable weight. If you have a standard medium or high-mass tonearm you leave this weight in place however, if you own a low-mass tonearm you remove the weight, which reduces the mass of the OM cartridge to just 2.5 g.

Ginger Valentine, of Interdyn, told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine: ‘The OM 5S is a brilliant solution for someone who's just starting out in vinyl, or for a DJ who wants to enjoy more detail and nuance than durable DJ cartridges can provide. Once they've tried the OM 5S and gotten a taste for true analogue sound, upgrading is as simple as swapping the supplied spherical stylus for a more subtle OM model.

Available now, the Super OM 5S sells for $59 (RRP).
