The new Franco Serblin Lignea loudspeakers will make their Australian debut at the upcoming Australian Hi-Fi and AV Show in Melbourne, 21st–23rd October.
Although Franco Serblin classifies it as a ‘floor-standing’ loudspeaker, the Lignea design would more accurately be described as a stand-mount speaker with an integral stainless steel speaker stand, particularly since the bass reflex cabinet has a volume of only four litres.
The bass/midrange drive in the Lignea is a custom-designed unit that’s 110mm in diameter. It is crossed to a 27mm impregnated textile dome tweeter at 2.3kHz via a first order filter. Designer Massimiliano Favella said that the Lignea design was one of the last conceived by the late Franco Serblin (1940–2013) but that it had taken three years to bring his conception to fruition. ‘During all the steps, I always followed his teaching and his “modus operandi” for every single detail,’ said Favella. ‘Today I wish to affirm that the value we give to things is the meaning we put in them. The value I attribute to the Lignea is the profound esteem I always had for Franco.’
According to Boris Granovsky, of Absolute HiEnd, which distributes Franco Serblin speakers in Australia, the idea Serblin had for Lignea stemmed from his perception that there was a need for a small loudspeaker that could easily be integrated into the environment of an ordinary listening room. ‘Its aesthetic features, its dimensions and the quality of the sound make the Franco Serblin Lignea unique, yet satisfying for everyone,’ he told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. ‘Every cabinet is made from a single piece of solid wood and inside each cabinet there are reflectors to control internal resonances. The two drivers are solidly mounted on an aluminium panel that’s inset into the cabinet.’
Franco Serblin rates the in-room frequency response as 58Hz to 36kHz (no dB envelope stated) and the sensitivity at 83dBSPL at one metre, for a one watt input. Nominal impedance is specified as 8Ω. Pricing will be confirmed at the Australian Hi-Fi & AV Show, but Granovsky expects them to sell for around $7,800 (RRP) per pair.
