Focal’s last three high-end headphone releases (the Elear, Utopia and Clear) have all been open-back designs so it’s something of a surprise that its latest model, the Elegia, is a closed-back design. They were available to hear for the first time in Australia at the recent Australian Hi-Fi & AV Show being held at the Como Hotel in Melbourne's South Yarra.

As with all Focal’s other high-end models, the Focal Elegia was not only designed in France, but is also assembled in France.

The Elegia was designed for use with portable audio players, which are often used when commuting, so the Elegia has excellent sound-proofing, to ensure anyone nearby can’t hear your music,’ says Focal. ‘As for the listener, the realism and naturalness of the diffused sound is striking from the very first seconds of listening.’

The Focal Elegia uses a newly designed full-range speaker as a headphone driver. It has what Focal calls a ‘frameless’ voice coil that drives a 40mm diameter ‘M-shaped’ aluminium/magnesium dome. When you’re not using the headphones, you can store them in their supplied thermo-formed protective carry-case, which measures 250×240×120mm.

As you’d expect from Focal, the Elegia is a very stylish headphone, made from premium materials leather, microfibre, and solid aluminium,’ says Focal, ‘and they’re extremely comfortable, with the headband moulding perfectly to the head, providing optimal grip for on-the-go use, while the memory foam microfibre ear pads are soft and comfortable on the ears.’
