Linn's new Selekt DSM network music player/preamplifier, which is not only configurable into what are essentially different products, but is also the first Linn product to have a USB audio input will be shown for the first time in Australia at this weekend's Australian Hi-Fi & AV Show.

The Linn Selekt DSM also comes with digital and analogue audio inputs—as will all Linn network players manufactured after 1st October 2018.

The new Linn Selekt DSM is available as a dedicated streaming source to drive an existing system, or can be configured with an amplifier output stage so it can directly drive speakers. Whatever configuration you choose, you can also optionally upgrade the internal DAC architecture to Linn’s ‘Katalyst’ D-to-A conversion.

You can also personalise the way the Selekt DSM operates, and it’s been designed so you can easily operate it without an app. For example, that dial on the front panel, which is made from cut-glass, will begin to glow whenever you approach the Selekt DSM. Then, when you touch the dial, it will rotate with watch-like precision in direct response to your touch. The customisable smart buttons, which Linn says it crafted to feel like piano keys, respond instantly with the detailed music information appearing on the onyx-black OLED display.

'Delivering a tactile and beautiful musical experience, Selekt DSM will make any system sound better, and help you fall in love with music all over again,’ says Gilad Tiefenbrun, of Linn. ‘We love the clarity of digital music, but we also love the tactility of physical records. It’s easy to feel we’ve lost touch with the immersive experience of playing a vinyl record—the LP selection, the arm-lift-lower, the anticipation during those first pops and clicks. Selekt DSM revolutionises our physical interaction with digital music; every aspect is precision engineered for a tactile and enriched listening experience.’

The Linn Selekt DSM includes a new version of Linn’s ‘Space Optimisation’ technology, which uses digital signal processing to ensure you get the best possible sound by removing the distorting effects of your listening room. Space Optimisation also enables you to get the best sound from your speakers no matter where you place them in your listening room, so you no longer have to manage your room around your speaker placement.

The latest version of the Space Optimisation far advances the original. At the Show Nigel Ng, from Linn distributor Advance Audio, showed us how simple it is to map complex room shapes, to define wall types, the positions of doors and windows, even room temperature, along with the speaker ad listening positions, with the software then optimising the Selekt output to the room.

Every Selekt DSM is built by hand at Linn’s factory in Glasgow, Scotland and if you decide to add an upgrade module after you’ve already purchased your DSM, the upgrades come in the form of removable cartridges so that any Linn dealer can install them easily in your home—you don’t even have to take your Selekt to your dealer. Australian prices start at $7,995 and step up to $13,995 if you include all available options.
