The Bluesfest Touring season is expanding by the minute as it delivers the incredibly diverse second instalment in a series of sideshow announcements. Peter Noble, Director of Bluesfest describes the announcement as; “an eclectic mix of trip-hop, hip-hop, funk and not to mention a little bit of free-jazz and psychedelia, an unmissable series of shows that are not for the faint hearted.”

British pioneering trip-hop trio Morcheeba will be heading to Melbourne and Sydney along with MC for the ground-breaking hip-hop group Jurassic 5, Chali 2na with his band House of Vibe. Forming in 1995, Morcheeba have won the hearts of fans around the world with their dreamy, soulful, down tempo sounds. After breaking up in 2003 and working on solo projects the Godfrey brothers and Skye Edwards have since reunited over the last three years and longtime fans will be please to know they are coming to Australia with their original line-up.

Also appearing in Melbourne and Sydney is funk pioneer and inventor of the ‘slap bass’ technique, Larry Graham with his band Graham Central Station who has become one of the most in demand recording and touring artists in the world, included collaborations and touring with Prince.

Larry Graham is the thumping, funky bass engine who singlehandedly bought the instrument to the forefront of modern music and provided the churning undercurrent for numerous hits by Sly and the Family Stone including “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” “I Want To Take You Higher”. After Sly and the Family Stone, Larry Graham founded and fronted Graham Central Station who gave us hits such as “Your love”, “Feel The Need In Me”.

Scottish singer, songwriter and musician KT Tunstall will be taking on an extensive tour including Newcastle, Central Coast, Dee Why, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. From the young busker who burst onto the UK’s ‘Later’ programme with Jools Holland way back in 2004 – pumping her ‘Wee Bastard’ loop machine into highly infectious rhythms and beats. KT Tunstall has grown in voice and maturity through four albums and a swag of best-selling singles.

Last but not least we announce a very special double-bill and a first for Australia; Captain Beefheart’s collaborators- The Magic Band and Grandmothers of Invention featuring original members of the Mothers of Invention. Sydney and Melbourne will be treated to one virtuoso night of classic favourites from the unique and ground-breaking songbooks of Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa.

See below for tour details and artist profiles.

From his days as the original bass funkmeister with Sly and the Family Stone and pioneering the ‘slap bass’ technique, Larry Graham’s unconventional style has since been adopted and refined by countless bassists representing a variety of genres, including Flea, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Stu Hamm, Doug Wimbish, Stanley Clarke, Bootsy Collins and generations of others.

After Sly and the Family Stone, Larry Graham founded and fronted Graham Central Station, the funk-soul collective that has been his home (apart from a few solo years) for the last forty years.

Raise Up, Larry Graham and Graham Central Station’s latest CD features guest appearances from Prince and Raphal Saadiq and shows that, four decades after their first outing, the same potent ingredients that made the band a funk powerhouse in its early years are still very much in the mix: thumping funk rhythms, infectious melodies and riffs, tight grooves, and of course, that churning slap-and-pluck bass undercurrent that pushes it all into overdrive.

Featuring three longtime Magic Band members Mark ‘Rockette Morton’ Boston, John ‘Drumbo’ French and Denny ‘Feelers Rebo’ Walley.

Combining elements of free jazz, blues and rock, Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band produced what is commonly regarded by critics and fans as one of rock’s truly original bodies of work – finding fans in Frank Zappa, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jack White, The Kills, Tom Waits and Sonic Youth and many more. The world lost The Captain in 2010 but The Magic Band continues his musical legacy, hitting the road and playing classics from albums such as “Trout Mask Replica”, “Clear Spot”, “Safe As Milk”, “Lick My Decals Off Baby” and “Bat Chain Puller”. Matt Groening (The Simpsons/Futurama creator) was the catalyst for The Magic Band to reform when he curated an All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in 2003 and we thank Matt as now the Captain’s legacy and genius lives on!

“Zappa's been dead for two decades, but if you want the best live representation of his classic tunes now, go see GrandMothers of Invention.” - Dave Segal /

The GrandMothers of Invention are the only Mothers Of Invention/Frank Zappa Alumni consistently performing the music of The Maestro since 2003. Featuring members from two different Zappa eras - keyboard wizard Don Preston and vocalist/saxophonist/woodwinds Bunk Gardner - the GrandMothers of Invention perform favourites from the Zappa canon, including “One Size Fits All”, “Bongo Fury”, “Overnite Sensation”, “Uncle Meat”, “Roxy & Elsewhere” and “We're Only In It for the Money”.
