HiTV Communications has announced a new product, the iDroid8000 2-DIN head unit, which among many other functions, allows Android OS to be used via the head unit. But the unit also works with iOS and HiTV claims this is the first product of its kind available in Australia.

The powerful twin on-board CPU chips allow the seamless switching between the standard AVN menu (audio, video and navigation) and your Android device. Android mode, of course, provides access to the hundreds of thousands of apps and games. But more usefully, the iDroid8000 will bring the wonders of the world wide web into your vehicle. Obvious uses would be email retrieval and sending, social network access, photo and file sharing and internet radio.

Apart from the obvious delights of having Android in your car, the iDroid8000 also caters for iPhone/iPod users by providing full menu access to music libraries by playlist, artist, genre, etc.

But the iDroid8000 is also a very well featured AVN head unit with navigation; simply connect your iDroid8000 to the internet through your Smartphone/3G mobile modem, which can be used to provide access to real-time traffic, live updates, POIs and street view navigation, even if that last is a little more clunky than standard GPS.

Bluetooth is also provided for both for hands-free phone operation and for music streaming. The built-in microphone also provides voice control of certain apps such as Google Maps navigation for example. The iDroid8000 provides steering wheel control integration which can be used to navigate menus and activate a number of functions and features.
