Danish high-end manufacturer Gryphon Audio Designs has released its Sonett Phonostage as a stand-alone product, it having previously been available in only modular form for optional installation into Gryphon’s Diablo 300 and Diablo 120 integrated amplifiers.
The Gryphon Sonett is a fully-discrete, d.c.-coupled phono stage that in addition to precision RIAA equalisation offers six primary switchable load impedances for moving-coil cartridges (10Ω, 20Ω, 80.6Ω, 100Ω, 200Ω and 402 Ω). These primary options can be combined to enable other load options, so that a load of 45Ω can be achieved by activating both the 80.6Ω and the 100Ω DIP switches. Rasmussen told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine that the Sonett MM/MC Phonostage uses exclusively WIMA polypropylene capacitors for its precision RIAA correction and that all other components in the circuit, which include low V(on) voltage Schottky barrier diodes, separate Talema toroidal power transformers for each channel and low-noise linear series regulators, are the finest available. ‘The Gryphon Sonett phono stage and will provide a significant upgrade for any system assembled to extract the very best from black vinyl grooves to enlighten the lives of dedicated music-lovers for years to come,’ said Simon Zanin of Kedcorp, which distributes Gryphon in Australia.
