Edifier has released a pair of two-way active wireless remote-controlled bookshelf speakers that it claims are ‘Hi-Res Audio Certified’ and sell for just $399.95.
The bass/midrange drivers are 95mm in diameter and use a metal cone, rubber roll surround and an aluminium basket. They’re driven by amplifiers rated with an output of 32-watts. The 19mm-diameter tweeters have domes made from what Edifier calls ‘Titanium-Laminate’, and are driven by individual 12-watt amplifiers. The overall frequency range is claimed as 55Hz to 20kHz: an upper frequency that doesn’t quite put the S880DB in ‘hi-res audio’ territory.
You can deliver your music to the S880DB speakers wirelessly, via Bluetooth v4.1, but this is not a hi-res transmission method. For this you can input analogue signals via a standard RCA input, or digital signals via optical or coaxial inputs. There’s also a USB input. Whatever input you use, you can adjust volume, bass and treble via the supplied wireless remote, or via controls on the back panel of the left speaker, which contains all the electronics.
‘The S880DB (are) the first Hi-Res Audio certified speakers from Edifier,’ says Amy Feain, PR for Edifier. ‘These speakers are compact desktop bookshelf speakers designed to connect to computers, gaming consoles, and all types of devices. Stream your music wirelessly to the S880DBs using Bluetooth v4.1 technology. Connect your laptop, tablet or phone using Bluetooth and get the party started from your playlist.’
Available on-line now from Edifier, the S880DBs retail for $399.95 (RRP).
