The annual Sound+Image Awards night took place on Friday night, honouring the top products in hi-fi and home theatre.

The 2008 Sound+Image Awards were held on Friday night in Darling Harbour, Sydney, with 38 Products of the Year announced, together with more than 50 products receiving highly commended status.

"These are the products we rate as the best and best value going forward into 2008," said Sound & Image Editor Jez Ford. "They will all feature in our special Awards edition of Sound & Image, which goes on sale on December 7th."

The annual black-tie Awards night dinner has become a essential event in the industry’s calendar. Since their inception in 1989, the Awards have recognised excellence in the design, manufacture and installation of home entertainment equipment.

Winners included Pioneer's 50-inch full-HD Kuro plasma television, which won PLASMA OF THE YEAR, and Samsung's 46-inch full-HD M8 LCD TV, which won LCD OF THE YEAR.

The Marantz PM7001 KI received STEREO AMPLIFIER OF THE YEAR UNDER $2000, with the judges commenting it offered "Stunning performance at a price I would not have believed possible…"

This year's Awards also sees a number of new categories, including High-Definition Video Source, covering Blu-ray and HD DVD products, plus expanded coverage of hi-fi categories.

The full list of winners will appear in Sound & Image's special Awards issue, publishing December 7th.
