First introduced on Mordaunt-Short’s Performance Series loudspeakers, ATT (Aspirated Tweeter Technology) is a patented design that uses strategically positioned vents to produce a diffuse sound field at the rear of the speaker, with stunning results for the treble sound. ‘It lowers the colouration that plagues traditional closed-back designs and means the tweeters literally ‘breathe’ for a phenomenally open and detailed sound,’ says Ralph Grundl, of Qualifi, which distributes Mordant Short in Australia. ‘When Mordaunt-Short released Performance in 2004, it made a statement of intent and showed what it was capable of, with some remarkable design innovations. Since the range’s introduction, many of these principles have disseminated down to Mordaunt-Short’s other products—most notably Mezzo.’
Grundl says Mordaunt-Short’s Mezzo loudspeakers ‘offer staggering performance and earth-shattering design techniques whilst delivering value for money.’ The foundation models in the range are the Mezzo 2 (Bookshelf) and Mezzo 6 (Floorstanding). ‘Mordaunt-Short has yet again created two-channel stereo bliss and very soon, these two elegant designs will be joined by a complete multi-channel range,’ he added.
Mezzo uses the latest generation 165mm (6.5-inch) CPC (Continuous Profile Cone) bass drivers. This proprietary technology produces predictable driver performance by ensuring controlled piston-like movement at low frequencies and minimal break up at higher frequencies. Made from rigid anodised aluminium, Mezzo cones have incredibly low mass, and the driver chassis is bonded to a specially developed sound deadened casing which completely eliminates unwanted resonance effects and house the CPC drivers. ‘This advanced technology produces a deeply stunning and realistic performance with a beautifully clear midrange and simply awesome stereo imaging,’ says Grundl. The speakers come with easily removable magnetic grilles which sit neatly flush against the baffle and in a choice of either light oak or dark walnut cabinet finishes. Prices range from $999 to $2,199 per pair.
