It will sell here for $6,500 (RRP). According to Cameron Keating of MaxMedia, ‘the sonic heart of the AM-777 Premier Class Amplifier beats like a seductive single-ended-triode amplifier.’ As you’ve probably guessed from that quote, the new AM-777 is a hybrid design. Abbingdon Audio Research (AMR) says the first stage is a Single Ended Triode (SET) valve stage without any negative feedback to provide voltage gain. The second section is a pure-power buffer stage using bipolar technology to provide current gain. ‘This atypical arrangement, which AMR calls “Optigain”, sees the magical spirit of the music signal delivered with an unusual level of silkiness and power,’ says Keating. There are two power transformers inside, a 380VA toroid for the output stage and a 32VA EI audio transformer for the valve stage. ‘This dedication to power supply duties yields ultimate sonic results when it comes to supplying the highest quality of undisturbed power for the audio architecture,’ Keating told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. Volume is controlled by a 71-step attenuator, which operates in 1dB increments. The AM-777 also has a built-in USB DAC, which Keating says is a ‘tricked down’ design from the AMR CD-777. ‘In the AM-777 the DAC is re-clocked and mounted on an ultra-short signal path populated using the same highest quality components as the digital engine in the CD-777. With the DAC and amplifier mounted in one-box, the “shortest signal path” maxim has never been more accurate,’ he said.
