This time around designer and principal Andrew Tilsley has developed a ply model that he says is not only lighter and stronger than the painted MDF version, but also offers a stunning visual and audio feast. ‘Paired with one of the many famous Lowther, Fostex, Corel 8-inch drivers, the C-horn is designed to deliver a very detailed soundstage, deep base and magic detail,’ said Tilsley. ‘With the drivers wired directly to a Class-A solid-state or single-ended valve amp, the C-Horn excels by using a simple, but pure crossover-less, signal path. The C-Horn looks and sounds like no other speaker in the world.’
The units stand 1.4 metres tall and weigh close to 90kg each. The German-made acrylic side panels are 25mm thick. Customers can choose from a range of wood stains or painted gloss finishes. Advanced flat-pack kits are available for the DIYer, with kit pricing starting at $4,750 per pair. One customer wrote to tell Creation Audio of his experience: ‘I've now logged about 100 hours breaking in the Fostex 206E drivers on these fabulous speakers, and now I'm starting to truly enjoy the magic! It almost goes without saying that the holographic imaging and sound-stage is without peer—something that quality full-rangers are renowned for. But one aspect that has taken me by surprise is the bass response. Actually, it's more the bass response of other speakers that I am noticing! I've realised how much I had become accustomed to a specific sound of bass. The lower frequencies of the C-Horns are so natural, and sit so seamlessly alongside the rest of the frequency range that I almost had to re-learn how to listen!’
Tilsley, in conjunction with Australian Lowther representative, John Stevens, is working on a new Lowther cabinet which has just received blessing from Lowther in the UK for world-wide release later this year. Details to follow shortly.
